A Successive Detection Log Video Amplifier (SDLVA) is similar to a Detector Log Video Amplifier (DLVA), but with a distinct advantage: SDLVAs do not require a separate detector before the logarithmic video amplifier. Instead, they use multiple compressive stages of RF gain to emulate the exponential transfer function, providing small amounts of gain and compression. The output of each stage is coupled into a linear detector, resulting in fast pulse rise and settling times since signal gain and compression occur within the RF circuitry. SDLVAs are typically used in radar missile homing systems, radar altimeters, electronic warfare (EW), electronic intelligence (ELINT), and instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) receivers.
